How Book History can Enhance the Understanding of Texts: Examples from Renaissance Europe

Books are among the most durable historical artefacts –what else can you handle that’s 500 years old or more? (Buildings can be very old too, though not where I live, but they’ve often been restored in the interim, as books may have been too.) Books have been valued and saved for a long time, typically for two main reasons—for the texts they carry and for their beauty as objects (e.g. binding, illustrations, calligraphy, paper). Book history over the last 40 years has emphasized a new kind of value in books by viewing them as clues to the historical context and circumstances in which they were produced. In this approach books are studied as texts and as objects to illuminate past social relations, economic conditions, and cultural and intellectual practices and ideas of which the books are a unique surviving deposit. I’ll use some examples from my research in learned Latin books in Europe 1450-1650 (notably on Conrad Gessner) to propose some “maxims” of book history developed in the European case and to invite comparisons with East Asian scholarship on books. I will also raise some hopes for and worries about the transmission and cataloging of books in the digital era.
