（Amitabha 2.0: Buddhist Care for the Dying in Contemporary T
\n\nIn
Sinophone contexts\, there has been a long-standing connection between Bu
ddhism and practices surrounding death and dying—perhaps most famously rep
resented by the chanting of Amitabha Buddha’s name at the end of life. Thi
s connection has been so central that modernist reformers\, such as the Ch
inese monk Taixu\, often considered the father of Humanistic Buddhism\, cr
iticized it in his efforts to modernize the tradition and reorient it towa
rd this-worldly engagement. Today\, in Taiwan\, social engagement has beco
me a key characteristic of Buddhism. Nevertheless\, practices related to d
eath and dying remain a core aspect of the tradition\, continuing to shape
both institutional life and individual religious practice.\n\nThis presen
tation draws on an ongoing multi-sited ethnographic study\, still in its e
arly stages\, that examines Taiwanese Buddhism and practices surrounding d
eath and dying. It explores the intersection of historical and innovative
practices and how they manifest in various settings. At its core\, the pre
sentation focuses on Buddhist palliative care. Rather than viewing Buddhis
t engagement with death as a sign of traditionalism or decline\, it argues
that this domain is precisely where Buddhist thought and practice offer u
nique expertise—and where the tradition makes some of its most meaningful
